Guantanamo Uyghurs Banished to Treasure Island

Welcome to US Military 'Justice' Camp X-Ray Style

The embarrassment that is Guantanamo prison casts a shameful stain upon the United States’ claim to uphold justice, freedom and democratic values. As the Obama Administration continues to prevaricate  with hand-wringing platitudes about respecting human rights, while refusing calls for an official inquiry into the abuses at the notorious detention center, untold numbers of innocent people remain under the tender mercies of US military imprisonment. The cracks are however begining to widen as the US finds it increasingly difficult to justify detention without access to a fair and genuinely independent judicial trial or review.

To minimize the humiliation of  what has to be one of the most appalling cases of injustice, the Administration has initiated a managed release program in which numbers of ‘detainees’ (what a nice neutral term engineered by the Pentagon) will be despatched to what it considers ‘safe’ countries.

Now for the geography question, hands-up,  who can point-out the location of Palau on the atlas? Tough one huh? Well one body that knows for sure is the US State Department, which has targetted this remote Pacific Island as being the perfect location for some seventeen Moslem-Uyghurs, who its friends at the Pentagon have been illegally holding at Guantanamo.  By pure coincidence the United States  is completing a $US200 million aid-package for Palau (formerly under US administration until 1994). However State Department spokesman, Ian Kelly,  denied any link with the transfer of the Uyghurs.

Paradise Exile for Uyghurs

Paradise Exile for Uyghurs

Well a paradise island in the azure blue waters of the Pacific Ocean is sure better than being handed-over to communist China, which is angered at the decision, (Beijing claims East Turkestan, the Central Asian territory of the Uyghur people, as being part of China. http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/824587/china-angered-as-uighurs-get-new-home

However naturally relieved exiled Uyghurs may be at the news, in a more fair and just world the US Administration, having grossly abused the legal and human rights of those held at Guantanamo, should have considered itself morally and ethically obligated to compensate those innocent of any criminal or terrorist actions, by at the very least offering refuge in the United States.  Sadly President Obama does not appear to have any sense of ethical responsibility concerning the plight of such people and would seemingly prefer to remove them to distant locations, in the hope that a blanket of amnesia will descend upon what has been a very troubling episode in US history.

No Justice or Reparation for Illegal Detention of Uyghurs

All Smoke and No Fire

With all the annoying predictability of a creaking door communist China through its propaganda machine Xinhua today condemned the decision of the Paris city authorities to award the Dalai Lama honorary citizenship. Waving the same cudgel of intimidation it always uses, China’s Foreign Ministry (more for domestic consumption one imagines) claimed the award  presented “a grave interference in Sino-French relations”.

Spokesman Qin Gang informed a foreign press briefing that: “Such a move stirs strong indignation among the Chinese people,” claiming that it would threaten  the cooperation between Paris and Chinese cities, and destabilize the relationship between China and France.

Such bully-boy posturing by Beijing normally dissolves at the sound of trade deals,  along with the prospect of more foreign capital being invested in China.

Miss Tibet 2009

Miss Tibet 2009-Over $2000 Better Off

Miss Tibet 2009-Over $2000 Better Off

Image:ap

Miss Tibet 2009 has just been crowned in Northen Indian hill town of Dharamsala, India, now the seat of the exiled Tibetan government in exile, and home to thousands of Tibetans.  However, 20 year Tenzin Choezom will find it difficult to take success onto the international beauty stage, as communist China will exert considerable pressure to prevent such a development.

Tenzin’s sights however seem to be set upon  a career in journalism, the girl from Dharamsala hoped  her success and involvement in the pageant will prove inspiring to other Tibetans.

“I would like to tell all Tibetan youngsters that please come on the stage and show your talent, wit and beauty, especially, Tibetan girls because they are always hiding their talents. Please come on the stage and perform like me.”

Next Stop Paris

Tibet's Leader Lands in Paris June 6

Tibet's Leader Lands in Paris June 6

The Dalai Lama, arrived in Paris today, amidst some concern the visit may unsettle recently restored relations between France and communist China. The Tibetan political leader is in France to accept an honorary citizenship of the French capital. He declared that the visit is not political;

“Once more I’m very happy to come to France. The main reason of my visit is to receive the honour citizen [sic] of Paris.”

Such comments will not reassure communist China, which has criticized European countries that have received the Dalai Lama during his European tour.

Tibetan Leader Invites International Scrutiny

Hoping For Autonomy While Tibetans Are Struggling for Independence

Hoping For Autonomy While Tibetans Are Struggling for Independence

Image:imageproxy

Tibet’s political leader, called upon the international community to undertake an independent assessment of the situation in his country and pressurize communist  China to end the “oppression”.

“Please, international community, judge whether there is a problem or not. Go there and investigate.” he told Dutch parliamentarians on Friday June 5 .

“In the case the majority of people genuinely are happy, then our information is wrong … and we will have to apologise to the Chinese government. If, on the other hand, there is real resentment to China’s … oppression, then tell the Chinese government they should accept the reality and should start a realistic approach. Force is not a solution.”

The  Dalai Lama also informed MPs that his faith in the communist Chinese authorities was becoming “thinner” as efforts to seek negotiation continue to falter. He again stressed that he was not seeking independence for Tibet, a message that is in stark contrast to the political aspirations of his own people, who continue their struggle against Chinese occupation in the hope of a free and independent Tibet.

Miss Tibet Takes To the Catwalk

Who Will Wear The Miss Tibet Crown-2009?

Who Will Wear The Miss Tibet Crown-2009?

Image:misstibet.com/lobsang wangyal

The Himalayan hill station of Dharamsala, de-facto capital of Tibet’s exiled population and their Administration is buzzing with anticipation as the town began hosting this year’ s Miss Tibet Pageant

“The three-day pageant in which four Tibetan girls are participating began on June 5 Friday. The models who are participating are born in exile in India,” event organiser Lobsang Wangyal informed journalists.

“On the first day, we organised a swimsuit round. Talk and talent rounds would be organised Saturday. On the final day, four rounds – introduction, evening gown, traditional costume and interview – would be held.” he said. In 2008 only two models participated in the contest, that was first launched in 2002, generating a  mixed response amongst Tibetan exiles. Some objected to the event claiming it was not in keeping with Tibetan culture.

This year’s event  has seen more entrants, according to Lobsang “Initially seven models applied for participation, but later three withdrew,”. This year’s competition has a theme of recognising the support offered by India to Tibetan exiles. The contestants are: Dolkar, 24, from Dehradun, 18-year-old Ngawang Choying from Darjeeling, 20-year-old Tenzin Choezom and 24-year-old Yeshi Lhamo, both from Himachal Pradesh.

Ngawang, the competition’s youngest contestant said: “Whether I win or lose, I will still be recognised by people wherever I go. And I will always try to spread the message of the Miss Tibet Pageant, which is about spreading the beauty of Tibet and Tibetan women.”

Miss Tibet 2009 will be awarded Indian Rs.100,000, while the first runner-up will be presented Rs.50,000 and the second runner-up Rs.25,000.

Doctoring The Facts on Tibet

A Barnettism is according to the ‘Shorter Dictionary of  ’Experts’  on Tibet’

‘A phrase employed to distort, misrepresent or conceal the nature and degree of oppression inside occupied Tibet. It can also be used to extentuate human rights violations committed by Communist China, distort the political nature of Tibetan resistance inside Tibet,  and present the communist Chinese regime in a positive light’.

Thankfully there are only a handful of individuals who peddle such cold-hearted deception, their motivation for doing so remains uncertain, particularly given the fact that all of them owe their current positions to the support, generosity and trust of Tibetans. One member of this minority cabal is Robert Barnett, who disguises his consistent corruption of the facts, through a pseudo-intellectual smog. The following extracts are taken from one of his articles, which appeared in the Guatemala Times http://www.guatemala-times.com/opinion/syndicated/china-stands-up/1038-a-way-out-of-tibets-morass-.html

“Visceral sparring matches are continuing, with the Dalai Lama recently describing Tibetans’ lives under China as a “hell on earth”. He was almost certainly referring to life during the Maoist years rather than the present..”

Well of course Robert surely the Tibetan leader could only have been referring to history, as Tibet today enjoys so much freedom and progress, not! Was this fact-free conclusion reached via China’s  state propaganda machine, Xinhua, or did  you just feel it was time to come out of the communist closet and imply that there are presently in Tibet no forced labor camps, no mass campaigns of forced sterilisations, no systematic torture, no forced resettlement, no restrictions of religion and culture?

“Last year’s protests were the largest and most widespread in Tibet for decades. Participants included nomads, farmers, and students, who in theory should have been the most grateful to China for modernizing Tibet’s economy. Many carried the forbidden Tibetan national flag, suggesting that they think of Tibet as a separate country in the past..”.

What patronising and imperialist nonsense, Presumably the Irish should have been grateful for the improved economics that the occupying English brought to Dublin during the late 19th Century as their culture and nation were under siege. Or perhaps Robert would have contented that blacks under Apartheid South Africa should have in theory welcomed the economic development  in Johannesburg or Durban?  How ungrateful these ‘natives can be!

Moreover, Barnett is also fully aware that Tibetans carrying the banned Snow Lion flag are not doing so for any other reason than to call for Rangzen (independence) and those inside Tibet do not merely ‘think’ that their nation was once independent.

“The Dalai Lama could cut down on foreign meetings and acknowledge that, despite China’s general emasculation of intellectual and religious life in Tibet, some aspects of Tibetan culture (like modern art, film and literature) are relatively healthy”.

Classic Barnettisms at play here, contrasting the castration of Tibetan society with a  supposedly healthy creative scene in Tibet, with a sly implication that somehow progress in modern culture mitigates against the oppression. and injustice.

“Last October, British Foreign Minister David Miliband was so anxious to maintain Chinese good will that he came close to denouncing his predecessors’ recognition of Tibet’s autonomy 100 years ago.”.

So Miliband only came close? Never actually decided or formally acted and published a change of UK policy on Tibet’s status?  That is not what Robert asserted in October 2008 in which he assured New York Times readers that:

“The exiles’ decision followed an announcement on Oct. 29 by David Miliband, the British foreign secretary, that after almost a century of recognizing Tibet as an autonomous entity, Britain had changed its mind. Mr. Miliband said that Britain had decided to recognize Tibet as part of the People’s Republic of China.”.Like much else of his writing that proved to be a gross betrayal of the facts, as exposed here http://tibettruth.wordpress.com/2009/03/14/britain-has-not-changed-its-policy-on-tibets-status/

“All sides would gain by paying attention to two Tibetan officials in China who dared to speak out last month. A retired prefectural governor from Kardze told the Singapore paper Zaobao that “the government should have more trust in its people, particularly the Tibetan monks,” and the current Tibet governor admitted that some protesters last year “weren’t satisfied with our policies,”.

This another favoured theme of Robert Barnett, one echoed by the recent so-called independent report on the Tibetan protests of 2008,  that it is not the injustice of Tibet being illegally occupied, or the nature and extent of human rights violations inflicted upon Tibetans that generates political resistance and protest in Tibet.  No, according to Robert  Tibetan unrest can be addressed by improving social and economic policies, again this patronises Tibetans and misrepresents the political aspirations of the Tibetan people when they face bullets, tanks and torture to demand Tibet’s independence.

Back From China Nancy Recalls Human Rights Values

Having discussed commerce and environmental issues with the communist Chinese leadership, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, upon her return to the United States has regained her usually strident voice on human rights. Prior to her departure to Beijing she was rather silent on the subject.

On the twentieth commemoration of the Tiananmen Square massacre she addressed a gathering at Capitol Hill Washington DC, informing activists and fellow politicians that: “We will not rest until there is freedom of speech and assembly and openness in China and Tibet”.
