Whose Aspirations?

Image:archivepress

Although I have clearly articulated Tibetan aspirations, which are in accordance with the constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the laws on national regional autonomy, we have not obtained any concrete result. Judging by the attitude of the present Chinese leadership, there is little hope that a result will be achieved soon. Nevertheless, our stand to continue with the dialogue remains unchanged…..As a free spokesperson of the Tibetan people I have repeatedly spelled out their fundamental aspirations to the leaders of the People’s Republic of China” (emphasis added) (Extracts from March 10 Statement by HH The Dalai Lama 2010)

Many people will be asking what is meant by “Tibetan aspirations”? Does this refer to the wishes of the Tibetan people? If so what evidence supports an assertion that Tibetans inside Tibet are facing torture, prison and bullets for an aspiration, defined by and contained within communist China’s constitution?

As revealed by the decades of resistance to Chinese rule, the widespread protest of 2008, and presently, the common aspiration remains for national freedom and independence, a reality recognized by His Holiness:

“I also know that every Tibetan hopes and prays for the full restoration of our nation’s independence” (HH The Dalai Lama March 10-1994)

Raise A Cry For Rangzen

Commemorating Sacrifice-Honouring Courage-Advocating Freedom

March 10 2010 is the 51st Commemoration of the1959 Lhasa Uprising, when Tibetans rose up against the brutal oppression of China’s military occupation. The spirit of resistance and hope for freedom and justice today burns as brightly across Tibet, despite decades of colonization and attempted assimilation. In solidarity with the aspiration of Tibet’s national liberation, Tibetans and supporters will gather in cities around the world  to honor the courage and sacrifice of Tibetans, and call for an end to the tyranny of China’s illegal occupation.

What are we championing on this day? What do we honor? Which principles do we stand for? What is the objective in demonstration? What message are we seeking to convey? When we stand with Tibetans in Chicago, Brussels, Berlin, New York, Minneapolis and cities around the world, where is our heart? Are we in solidarity with the Tibetans inside Tibet? Do we share their hope for justice, freedom and independence? What do we support today? What do we represent? What do our placards and banners say? There is only one message which is being paid for by the courage and sacrifice of Tibetans in Tibet, that is Independence for Tibet. Will you be carrying that message today?

Bho Rangzen Tsangma Yin!
