June 4 2009 Beijing Security Lockdown

In an almost deserted Tiananmen Square foreign journalists are banned, undercover police, security personnel everywhere, demanding passports, stopping overseas TV camera crews and preventing photographers from entering the location of the bloody massacre of June 4, 1989. Today the communist authorities even banned any media coverage of the daily flag-raising ceremony. Plain clothes officers confronting journalists on nearby streets, shouting abuse and threatening violence.  What does communist China’s Foreign Ministry have to say about these extraordinary security measures:

“Today is like any other day, stable”

(Qin Gang, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
