Statement From Tibetan Youth Congress, Dharamshala, September 21.

The three activists of the Tibetan Youth Congress who are sitting for the hunger-strike protest against Beijing has completed 19 days and despite warning from Indian authorities and doctors examining their health to cut short the fast, the trio says they are firmly resolved to carry on until “their demands and appeals are acted upon.”

The hunger-strike, which the organizer says is indefinite, started September 3 in light of the current crisis in Tibet where 51 Tibetans have resorted to setting their bodies on fire since 2009 to protest against what exile groups say is Beijing’s repression and to demand the return of Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader.

The strike is seeking immediate international intervention into the Tibet crisis and independent access to understand the ground reality inside Tibet which is restricted to international media and fact-finding missions.

Tenzin Norsang, joint Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, said the health of the three activists is fast deteriorating and pressure from Indian authorities are mounting to call off the strike.

“We have received a notice letter from the Indian police on Tuesday asking us to terminate the strike in view of medical reports stating deteriorating health condition of the three activists,” Norsang said.

The three strikers Dhondup Lhadar, Penpa Tsering and Jigme have reportedly lost 11.30Kgs, 10.30Kgs and 9.30Kgs respectively.

Apart from the strike, Norsang said online and signature campaigns are being carried out simultaneously at the protest site Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. He also said peaceful vigils are held every evening since the start of the strike.Meanwhile, the three strikers are being visited by Tibetans and non Tibetan supporters from various corners to express their solidarity many of whom gets emotional and break down, Norsang said.

Thank You

With an assurance from the United Nations, detailed today in a communication to the Tibetan Youth Congress, that it will appoint its officials to investigate the situation inside occupied Tibet and has reportedly requested a meeting with China’s government to discuss the situation, the hunger strike has been ended, having achieved major elements of the demands it sought from the UN.

Tibettruth wishes to express its admiration, respect and congratulations to the three Tibetan hunger-strikers for their remarkable protest, in addition we must recognize and applaud the tireless work and leadership of the Tibetan Youth Congress and in particular its President, Tsewang la. It has been an amazing journey over the last thirty days, inspirational, emotionally difficult but always determined to ensure Tibet’s true cause would be heard. We could not have realized te progress made without the 24/7 support of all at @tibettruth and so many wonderful friends on Twitter and Facebook. To each of you gratitude and respect.

Day 9: TYC Hunger-Strikers-Now Booked By NYC Park Police!

Image:courtesy of tsewangrangzen

The TYC Hunger-Strikers have now gone over 200 hours without food, in their fast for Tibet’s just cause for national independence and to raises awareness concerning China’s violent suppression of Tibetans and their culture. Photo Diary Of Day Nine Courtesy of Tsewang Rangzen

Meanwhile we have received reports that the harassment of this action by the New York Police Department is ongoing, characterized by insensitive and overly aggressive policing that is contemptuously disrespectful of the rights of the Tibetan activists and peaceful nature of their sacrifice. Yesterday  the Park P started throwing their muscle around and actually gave one of the Hunger-Strikers a ticket, we cannot help but wonder if this event is being unfairly discriminated against, as a consequence of political pressures applied via China, State Department, or the United Nations upon the Mayor’s Office.
