On the 20th day of “Indefinite Hunger Strike for Tibet” in front of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights, Ivan Simonovic, formally invited Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) President Tsewang Rangzen to his office for an official meeting to discuss the situation inside Tibet and the ongoing Hunger Strike in front of the United Nations.

In the meeting, TYC President strongly reiterated in detail the dire situation under the undeclared martial law situation in Tibet leading to self-immolations by Buddhist monks and nuns and the need for immediate intervention by the United Nations. He said, “the three hunger-strikers are willing to wait until their last breath to hear from the UN Secretary General on the 5 point appeals”. “When the Tibetans in Tibet make the ultimate sacrifice, their hope is the United Nations and the international community to be their voice”, he added.

The Assistant Secretary General said that he will contact the UN Secretary General and Human Rights Commissioner directly after the meeting. He also visited the hunger strike site to check on the deteriorating health condition of the hunger strikers and shared his deep concerns.”
