Tibet, A Taboo Word Within The State Department

Tibet-A Taboo Word Within The State Department

It would be easy for people, on the basis of President Trump’s comments on China to conclude that the USA is on a course of getting tougher with the Chinese authorities, trade of course is key in the present tensions between the two.

However behind the scenes, the State Department and its foreign policy experts are still applying a thick layer of appeasement when it comes to China. The occupants of the White House come and go but that failed and fossilized approach of ‘constructive enagagement’ continues within the corridors at 2201 C St., NW.

On February 8 Ms Alice G. Wells Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs hosted at the State Department a reception to mark Tibetan New Year. We just got a  copy of her speech in which she repeatedly references ‘Himalayan Region, peoples or communities’ There is of course no mention of Tibet, quite what those Tibetans gathered there thought of this would be interesting to note. As it will be to see how long her remarks remain on the State Department website!

Now that omission is no accident, the deliberate avoidance of mentioning Tibet in favor of ‘Himalayan Region’ is a reflection of the mindest of appeasement within the State Department to China. Fearful, even within the bowels of its Washington DC HQ of causing any offence, or being seen to endorse the very notion of an actual land called Tibet! Pathetic!

‘Jinpa’-Tibet Filmed Through The Lens Of China’s Regime.

Tibet Movies Another Propganda Tool Exploited By China's Regime

Image: en.rfi.fr

There is no untainted cinematic insight into the suppression and abuses inside Tibet, no full exposure of the harrowing realities of forced sterilizations, the destruction of a nomadic culture through a policy of re-settlement, nor any detailed documentary recording the environmental pillage. Which is transforming once verdant pastures and forests into a lunar-like landscape, with convoys of trucks heading back to communist China with their booty of timber and minerals. The transformation of Tibetan towns into yet another Chinese concrete facsimile, complete with gaudy excess and a range of previously unknown erosive social problems, continues apace, un-documented.

No genuine independent film-making is of course possible under such a repressive totalitarian regime, one desperate to convince the world that Tibet is undergoing positive change, thanks, we are asked to accept, to the seemingly compassionate rule of communist China. Unfortunately we’re denied any unbiased evidence which would reveal the progress claimed by the communist regime.

What we do have are seemingly unlimited amounts of Chinese films on Tibet, mostly designed for television broadcast, with sickly images of Tibetans dancing and singing in praise of yet another bumper-harvest, due no doubt to China’s enlightened agricultural policies. These are transparent disinformation with actors supposedly dressed in traditional Tibetan costumes, color coded to match the red and yellow branding of the communist Chinese flag! Barely able to move due to the overly abundant costume jewellery and obligatory fixed smile, set against images of modernity Chinese-style, like a crude layer of make-up they conceal a more disturbing reality.

Over recent years however a subtler form of propaganda has emerged, more cinematic, carefully crafted to present some illusion of balance and independence, yet the underlying message remains the same, albeit diluted and sophisticated. A rising directorial star of this Chinese state approved cinematic style is Mr Pema Tseden, or as he is known by his friends within the Communist Party Of China, Wanma Caida. Being a loyal citizen of communist China he carries a Chinese name along with his Tibetan version.

Couple days back his film ‘Jinpa’ was awarded top prize at France’s Festival International des Cinémas d’Asiethe. Like his previous works this film is a slick production filmed inside Tibet. While aesthetically his films have charm and nuance they cynically misdirect the viewer away from the brutal realities of life for Tibetans under Chinese rule. The alluring personal narratives and stunning landscapes he plays around with are an approved sleight-of-hand which assiduously avoid the erosion and oppression of Tibetan culture.

It is a reality which the Director surely knows dare not speak its name, his films clearly meet the propaganda requirements imposed by the Chinese regime, in that context he is a willing and conscious collaborator. Perhaps that explains his insistence that: “…filmmakers are starting to more accurately capture the essence of life in Tibet. They are starting to let go of the old stereotypes.” SOURCE

Those who see his films at festivals or art-houses need to be mindful of this. Sure his work can be selectively interpreted as offering “.. an uncompromising view of difficulty in modern society. They’re not deliberately provocative, but they also don’t offer us comfortable resolutions.”. A view presented by one Robert Barnet of Columbia University, top grade for nuanced euphemism there!

However the ‘difficulties’ of forced-labor camps, torture, ethnic-‘cleansing’ and cultural erosion do not feature in the cinematic vision of Pema Tseden. While the ‘modern society’ (translating as occupied and oppressed Tibet and its culture) is never truly explored and it’s important to remind yourself that the work of Pema Tseden would not be made public without the authorization of the Chinese regime.

In consideration of that we need to question what is it about his films that receives such approval?

May Grovels To China As Her Brexit Nightmare Darkens

Use of this video is for educational purposes, information and fair use. We are happy to declare this disturbing demonstration of appeasement is copyright of UK Government.

What’s going down with England’s Prime Minister? Hasn’t she got enough to contend with, trying to square the tortuous circle of exiting the European Union? Well looks like Mrs May has time enough to grovel before the Chinese regime in a nausea inducing video released today by her office. Desperate for business at any cost or humiliation, maybe next time her advisors will let her know there’s no such thing as Chinese New Year, as in China it’s called Spring Festival!

Turkish Reporter Serves His Government By Denying China’s Cultural Genocide Against Uyghurs

Image: Courtesy of @tibettruth

After the Chinese regime recently allowed in a select group of media to visit East Turkistan (so-called Xinjiang) the chosen reporters issued a glowing account of how wonderful the treatment of the Uyghur people was by China’s authorities.

The laughingly named ‘Silk Road Celebrity China Tour’ took place from January 9 to 16 and the compliant ‘journalists’ dutifuly regurgitated the propaganda narrative after being escorted around a number of locations.

One among that party surely merits this year’s award for nausea. Erdal Kurucay, a presenter from Turkey’s ATV station, who a number of Chinese media mouthpieces claimed rejected international concerns on the violent oppression of Uyghurs and their culture as little more than “terrorist propaganda” and “misinformation” propagated by “global capitalist and imperialist forces.”. A script drafted and approved in Beijing’s Department of Disinformation!

We’ve a feeling that this pro-Turkish government reporter was fulfilling a foreign policy agenda of his beloved authorities, which has been issuing a number of appeasing statements on China, in the hope of securing trade deals.

“When we went (our) prejudices were shattered. Because we read the Western media, and we act and take a stance according to the Western media, but we saw what a mistake we were making..” Source: https://ahvalnewstr.com/uighurs/turkish-pro-govt-reporter-denies-chinese-persecution-uighurs

He concluded by claiming that he had visited a ‘reducation center during the trip and insisted it been a “therapy centre” for criminals! Source: Ibid

Now there’s nothing new here, mainstream media and governments around the planet have been sucking up to the Chinese government, but to see Turkey effectively endorse the violent suppression of its Turkic brothers and sisters is particularly distasteful.

As to journalists and media outlets who serve as a conduit for the propaganda of China’s regime they are justly condemned as facilitating, through their active collaboration, the terrorism waged against those suffering under the tyranny of China’s dictatorship.

Double Standards From Global Codes Organization Censoring Tibet

Here’s the latest on our action regarding the International Standards Organization, they’re the guys with responsibility for among all other standardization, awarding and approving country codes. Which are used by the Unicode Consortium to classify and enable country flag emojis, and enjoyed across social media by folks around the digital planet.

Our letter to the Secretary General (Sergio Mujica) was ignored so we went public with our appeal and featured couple days back a post here on the issue. Within a few hours our team over on Twitter received a communication from ISO.

We took a closer look at that code (ISO 3166) and the organization states:

“As a general rule, the ISO 3166 maintenance agency does not assign official country code elements to other geopolitical areas or countries that are not member states of the UN”

Which raises the obvious question. Why has the ISO granted distinct country codes (that enable and authorize emoji country flags) to Western Sahara and Palestine, both of which are not recognized as member states of the United Nations, yet not to occupied Tibet?

We’ll continue to expose this clear double-standard and demand a response from the ISO, meanwhile if you would like to join that effort the Secretray General may be easily contacted on Twitter at @ISOSecGen

Breaking The Silence Of International Standards Organization And Unicode Consortium On Tibetan Flag Emoji

Sergio Mujica, Secretary-General of the ISO

Image:aircargonews

Subscribers and visitors to our site may recall that recently we launched an online campaign to lobby the International Standards Organization, since it is the authorizing body that classifies and approves emoji country flags. Presently it doesn’t endorse Tibet as a distinct territory, but classifies it as part of China. This means there exists no emoji of the Tibetan flag that can be used within social media platforms. As there are for Palestine and Western Sahara.

Image:archivenet

Partner organizations within the Unicode Consortium (such as Facebook, Apple, et al) follow the lead of the ISO and have subsequently not requested or initiated a Tibetan flag emoji. We regarded this a grossly unfair and a form of censorship and have lobbied those corporations with voting rights and pressed the case for Tibet. In addition on September 17, 2018 we sent an appeal to Mr Sergio Mujica ISO Secretary-General highlighting the inconsistencies of his organization with regard to classifying emoji country flags and requesting that a review be made with respect to Tibet and its flag.

No response has been received, and despite further communications to the ISO requesting the courtesy of a response to our appeal, Mr Mujica has chosen to ignore the concerns presented to him. Given the weeks which have passed since contacting his office and the lack of response from the ISO Twitter account we have decided to make public our appeal.

ISO Headquarters in Geneva

Image: ISO

We do so to better inform our many supporters and friends worldwide and to highlight what is clearly double-standards operated by the ISO and Unicocde Consortium which happily approved emoji flags for Palestine and Western Sahara yet is appeasing the Chinese regime by effectively censoring an Tibetan flag emoji.

The full copy of our appeal to the ISO Secretary General may be read here https://www.docdroid.net/jZAVRMh/isoletter.pdf For ease of reference we have highlighted key sections of the communication.

We shall continue to press the ISO for a response and meanwhile report upon and expose those within the Unicode Consortium who are blocking users of social media the freedom to post an emoji of the Tinetan national flag.

Appointing A Pathological Arsonist As Caretaker Of A Paper Mill

Image: archivenet

Even a glance at the news streams reveals just how screwed are global politics, none more so perhaps than within the United Nations. Which this week is meeting to appoint, or more correctly reappoint (minus any genuine opposition) a number of states onto its Human Rights Council. The list of those (a few will be stepping down at the end of the year to replaced by equally worrying nations) set to legislate and investigate human rights includes Afghanistan, Angola, Burundi, China, Cuba, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. Now there’s a bunch of authorities we can all reply upon to champion free-speech, civil, political and human rights, not!

Meanwhile the head of the European Union’s Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini and government representatives are keeping silent on the ethical concerns on having human rights abusers and oppressive regimes awarded responsibility for protecting freedoms and rights.
