Dharamsala: A day-long meeting unanimously resolved to establish a ‘Tibetan National Congress’ that will work for the restoration of Tibet’s independence from China’s rule.To coincide with the 100th anniversary of declaration of Tibet’s independence by the 13th Dalai Lama, the Tibetans’ independence protagonists that attended the meeting also decided to convene a grand international meeting next year to discuss ways to strengthen the group and its work for independence.Sonam Topgyal, former Kalon Tripa of the Central Tibetan Administration, who is the chief guest of the meeting, expressed his wishes for the success of the new independence group.
The participants divided into three sub-groups deliberated on a host of topics including the ways and means to strengthen the independence movement, international independence conference and other activities in 2013, campaign strategies for on-going Tibetan self-immolation and co-ordination activities among various groups and individuals working to restore Tibet’s independence.
The front-runners of pro-independence activists like Jamyang Norbu and Lhasang Tsering attended the meeting. Members of Tibetan parliament including Karma Choephel, Serta Tsultrim, Karma Yeshi, Bawa Kelsang among others attended the meeting and expressed strong support for the group.Tibetan National Congress is likely to become as the umbrella organization for various Tibetan groups and individuals grounded in the cause of Tibet’s independence.
