The Irish city of Cork is to receive today a delegation arriving with a suitcase full of blood-stained Chinese cash. It’s dignitaries will be extending a warm welcome to their guests in the hope of attracting and securing trade links. No doubt there will be many toasts raised, hands shaken and smiles for the attendant press.
Yet will anyone pause to reflect upon the ethics of associating the good people of Cork with a regime that forcibly sterilizes women, viciously oppresses the people of Tibet; who as Eire prepares to honor the 1916 uprising, are seeking to regain their own independence. Will there be any discomfort felt that embracing Chinese companies while offering an economic allure and the prospect of aiding the local economy, also serves to endorse the regime itself?
How so? Well The City Council Of Cork is sending a clear message that it is not sufficiently troubled by China’s grim record of tyranny, censorship and torture to disassociate itself from a collaboration that exposes it to a charge of lacking any concern for human rights. Is this the spirit of freedom and resistance to the tyrant that was so valiantly represented during the struggle for Eire’s freedom?
Perhaps it reflects an economy forced onto its knees by a corrupted banking system, and ‘salvaged’ by those arch economic terrorists the International Monetary Fund which left ordinary Irish people carrying immense social and economic burdens. Such forces are driving Ireland towards deals with China, if such associations secure long term employment for Cork there will be little complaint, especially from that elite which looks set to gain the most. It seems the venality and myopia that plunged Ireland into the chasm is set to start a new cycle, this time in cahoots with the Chinese regime.
